YouTube View Count Update 2026

A Practical Guide for Brands Working With Creators

What the August 24 update means for influencer marketing, campaign evaluation and view-based pricing

Prepared by Hey Stranger

01 The Quick Take

Starting August 24, 2026, YouTube will change how public views are counted across its video formats.

A public view will be counted from the moment a video begins playing, from the very first frame. The new standard will apply globally across long-form videos, Shorts and live streams, bringing public view counting more closely in line across formats.

For brands working with creators, the key takeaway is:

Public views will tell you how many times a video started playing. They should not be treated as the only indicator of meaningful viewing or campaign performance.

YouTube will continue reporting the previous view metric as Engaged views in YouTube Analytics → Advanced Mode, allowing creators to see how many viewers chose to continue watching.

This makes it more important for brands to understand which metrics they are using, what those metrics actually measure, and how they are being used in campaign pricing.

02 What Is Changing?

Before August 24

YouTube has historically used different view-counting systems across different video formats.

From August 24

A public view will count as soon as the video begins playing.

The update applies globally across:

  • Long-form videos

  • Shorts

  • Live streams

  • Other public video formats covered by YouTube's updated standard

YouTube expects creators to see their total public view counts increase faster moving forward.

What is NOT changing?

This update does not change YouTube Partner Program earnings or eligibility. YouTube says monetization will continue to use its relevant engaged-view and engaged-watch-hour metrics.

03 Public Views vs. Engaged Views

The most important distinction for brands to understand is this:

Public Views Engaged Views
Publicly visible Available to creators in YouTube Analytics
Count from the first frame Preserve the previous view metric
Useful for understanding initial exposure Useful for understanding continued viewing
Can increase faster under the new system Provides a more comparable historical viewing metric

YouTube says engaged views will remain available in YouTube Analytics → Advanced Mode.

What does this mean for brands?

If you need to evaluate Engaged Views for a creator partnership, ask the creator to provide the relevant Analytics data rather than relying only on the publicly displayed view count.

04 Why This Matters for Brand Integrations

Imagine a creator uploads a 12-minute YouTube video.

Your brand integration appears at minute 6.

The video receives:

100,000 public views

That number alone does not tell you how many people actually reached the brand integration.

Some viewers may start the video and leave within the first few minutes.

This is where audience retention matters.

Before working with a creator, consider:

1. The video's retention

How many viewers are still watching when the brand integration appears?

2. Historical retention

How do the creator's previous videos perform?

Do viewers consistently drop off early?

3. Integration placement

If a creator's audience tends to drop off early, placing the brand integration earlier may help increase actual exposure. However, based on our own experience, we don't recommend placing brand integrations too early, as this often leads to people leaving the video - which also influences how the algorithm shows the video to other users.

A useful question to ask:

How many viewers are likely to still be watching when my brand appears?

This is why creator evaluation should go beyond the headline view count.

05 What About CPM-Based Pricing?

This is one of the most important commercial considerations.

Many influencer campaigns use CPM-based pricing, where creator compensation is connected to the number of views generated.

For example:

CPM × view count = campaign payment

With the new public-view definition, brands should clarify which view metric the agreement is based on.

Before agreeing to a view-based deal, ask:

  • Are we using Public Views or Engaged Views?

  • When will the views be measured?

  • What Analytics data will the creator provide?

  • Is there a maximum number of paid views?

  • What happens if public views increase faster than engaged viewing?

The goal isn't to assume that one metric is automatically "better."

The goal is to make sure both the brand and creator are using the same definition when discussing campaign performance and pricing.

06 A Practical Creator Evaluation Checklist

When evaluating a YouTube creator for a campaign, don't rely on one number.

Consider the full picture:

Audience

  • Audience demographics

  • Geographic relevance

  • Audience quality

  • Unique viewers

Content Performance

  • Historical public views

  • Engaged views

  • Average View Duration

  • Audience retention

  • Engagement

Brand Fit

  • Content relevance

  • Creator credibility

  • Audience-brand fit

  • Previous brand collaborations

Campaign Performance

  • Actual brand exposure

  • Clicks or traffic

  • Conversions

  • Engagement

  • Other campaign-specific objectives

07 Questions to Ask Before Your Next Campaign

Before signing a YouTube creator partnership, consider asking:

About performance

“Could you share your Engaged Views and audience retention for recent comparable videos?”

About integration

“Where would the brand integration appear in the video?”

“What does retention typically look like around that point?”

About pricing

“Is the CPM based on Public Views or Engaged Views?”

“How will final campaign payment be calculated?”

About reporting

“Could you provide the relevant YouTube Analytics data after the campaign?”

These questions can make campaign expectations clearer for both sides.

08 What Brands Should Do Now

The August 24 update doesn't mean brands need to stop using YouTube views.

Instead, it means views need more context.

We recommend:

1. Review existing creator benchmarks

Understand historical performance before comparing future public-view numbers.

2. Clarify the view metric in contracts

Make sure Public Views and Engaged Views aren't being used interchangeably.

3. Look at audience retention

Especially when your brand appears inside long-form content.

4. Ask for deeper Analytics data

Public-facing metrics may not tell the complete story.

5. Evaluate the whole campaign

Connect creator performance to your actual campaign objectives rather than relying on views alone.

09 The Bigger Picture

Platform metrics are constantly evolving.

For marketers, the challenge isn't simply keeping up with every new metric.

It's understanding what the metric actually tells us.

A public view can help us understand exposure.

Engaged viewing can help us understand continued attention.

Retention can help us understand whether audiences stayed long enough to encounter a brand integration.

And campaign results tell us whether the partnership achieved its objective.

The best creator partnerships are evaluated through the full picture.

At Hey Stranger, we believe effective influencer marketing is about more than reach.

It's about finding the right creators, understanding their audiences, and building trust between brands, creators and consumers.
